Playing with fire in San Francisco

A great piece on 60 minutes last night spoke of the San Francisco Bay Bridge and the potentially devastating impact on the bay area if an earthquake were to strike. According to the segment, the two fault lines in the earth directly below the Bay Area are supposed to cause and earthquake every 140-150 years; the area’s last earthquake was nearly 140 years ago. The segment really honed in on the worry-free approach to getting a new bridge built that could withstand an earthquake. Apparently this plan had gone into place in 1990, is still have yet to be completed after 20 years of bureaucratic delays.
