One Bronx personal injury attorney contests that the streets and sidewalks of the Bronx led to countless accidents followed by lawsuits against the injuries that have arisen on these roads. It was felt that the most common case against New York City is a trip and fall accident caused by a faulty pedestrian sidewalks.

Before 2003, a person fell and was injured because of a defective sidewalk would normally sue the City of New York. But in 2003 the law changed when the City Council passed legislation that transferred the legal responsibility of the city to the owner of adjacent land. What this means is that after 2003 the person who slipped and fell was necessary to continue the neighboring landowner facing falling property that has been caused. (Note that there is an exception for one, two or three families own their homes. Slips, trips and falls in front of these types of premises are still the responsibility of New York City.)
